We talk selling t-shirts with Lucy Blue

Tagged with:

Leeds based tattooist and illustrator, Lucy Blue is a regular on Mercht, (our free platform for designing and selling merch) with her bold and brass t-shirts successfully being snapped up, time and time again.
With a love for working with bright colours, contemporary subjects, pop culture and pinups, Lucy decided to get into the merch game after realising that if people were willing to get her designs tattooed, why wouldn’t they want to wear them?!
We dropped her an email to chat t-shirt designs and selling tips – here are her words of wisdom.

Lucy Blue Tattoo,

Why put your designs on a t-shirt?

I think people enjoy making a statement. Even if it’s something as throwaway as a t-shirt with ‘ nap queen’ on, people will wear it and take a picture in it, post it on their social media and tag their friends etc. I don’t think that happens as much with prints. Plus it’s so lovely seeing people around with your design on!

How do you sell your t-shirts?

I promote them over on my Instagram. I try to be smart about putting them up on my Instagram at certain times too, when traffic is gonna be high and promote them around payday dates!

Lucy’s top 3 t-shirt tips

1) Keep it simple

I’ve had more success selling t-shirts with small designs like an emblem on the breast pocket, than I have huge prints on the front and back. They seem to be more trendy at the moment, but that’s perhaps more specific to my audience!

2) Consider when to promote

After 6pm is good because people are home from work and most likely to be pratting about on social media, meaning more people will see your shirts are for sale!

3) Create a Mockup

If you can, then you should mockup a design of someone wearing the t-shirt, to give people a bit more context. If it’s your second run of shirts, ask people from the first run to tag you in pics of them wearing the shirts, I’ve had more success with campaigns with people wearing the shirts than I have just the digital mock ups!
