We talk merch with Gatefold Record Lounge

Tagged with:

In celebration of Record Store Day, we spoke with Gatefold Record Lounge,  just one of many awesome independent record stores we have the pleasure of working with, to find out how they use their merchandise.

Gatefold Record Lounge is an independent record shop & coffee bar owned by husband and wife team Jak and Nicola. Based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, they’ve built a social space for people to enjoy music, speciality coffee, craft beer and wine, it’s a friendly shop that regularly hosts events including local vinyl DJs, pop-up street food and live music.

What type of merch do you have in the store?

At the moment we stock t-shirts, jumpers, totes, bags, badges and stickers but we’ve got plans for much more!

Why did you decided to create your own merch for the store?

We decided to create our own merch before we opened as we’re suckers ourselves for a good branded t-shirt or tote! We wanted to be able to represent our brand and figured our customers would probably want to too. It’s awesome seeing people out and about in our gear, getting our logo out there.

Your merch comes in a huge variety of colours. Why did you decide to do so many options?

We stock such a variety of colours at Gatefold as our customers are so varied – we like to make sure we’ve got something for everyone!

What’s your most popular piece of merch?

Our Gatefold jumpers did really well over winter, but the totes are probably our most popular piece of merch as they’re so practical too! They’re perfect for bagging up record purchases – they’re just the right size and get them safely home in all weather! We also love that they’re reusable so we can cut down on plastic bags.

What tips would you give to other small businesses looking to create their own line of merch?

Merch is well worth the investment, it gets your brand out there and keeps you fresh in your customers minds. Start with a couple of different lines and then increase it as you can see what works for your business.

Thinking of creating merch for your small business? We’ve over custom 500 products that are perfect for promo.
