The Travelling Canvas – Mitch Allenden

For our latest edition of The Travelling Canvas, we looked to the creative community of Leeds, recruiting tattooist and illustrator, Mitch Allenden Aka Sneaky Mitch.

We caught up with Mitch to discuss his top tips for designing a tote, why he’d send a bag to Micheal Bolton, and the inspiration behind his design.

For those who don’t know you, please can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name’s Mitch, I’m a tattooist and illustrator based in Leeds. I’ve been tattooing for around nine years, the last five have been at my studio Dock Street tattoos. We’ve recently opened a new place in Leeds city centre called Gold Room tattoos. My work involves a lot of animals, birds in particular

What was the inspiration behind your design for The Travelling Canvas?

The design was based on a bird called a superb starling. I wanted to design something that utilised the same style I use when tattooing but that would hopefully still appeal to everybody.

We think tote bags are awesome, but why do you love totes?

They don’t break when you fill them with beer and if you fill them with your favourite food, you can hang them off your ears and pretend to be a tiny horse with a feedbag.

Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to design their own tote bag?

Just enjoy the process and remember that the design is going to get warped and stretched depending on what’s in the bag.

What’s your favourite tote bag you’ve ever owned?

The one I currently have hanging off my ears whilst I pretend to be a tiny horse with a feedbag.

If you could send your tote bag to anyone in the world who would it be and why?

Michael Bolton. Because he’s Michael Bolton.

What’s in your bag right now?

Duct tape, zip ties, rubber gloves and a tarpaulin sheet.
