The Travelling Canvas – Lloyd Stratton

New Year, New Tote! Forget the diet, our New Year’s resolution is to create an army of awesome totes! January signals the launch of the 2nd collaboration tote in The Travelling Canvas  series, and a whole new design for you to get you’re hands on absolutely free.

So without further ado, let us introduce to you this month’s tote, designed by illustrator and all-round master of the fine liner, Lloyd Stratton!

For those who don’t know you, please can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a freelance illustrator living and working in Brighton. I create artwork in pen and ink for various brands, as well as running my own online print store.

What was the inspiration behind your design for The Travelling Canvas?

Snakes and roses are two of my favourite things to draw and it’s something I’d already started in my sketchbook a little while ago. When I got asked to design a tote bag for you guys it was the first thing that popped into my head and it seemed like the perfect fit. I had the latin phrase Amor Fati (meaning to ‘love your fate’) noted down in my sketchbook as well, and I thought it complimented the design nicely.

We think tote bags are awesome, but why do you love totes?

I like the simplicity of them. It’s a really nice format of printing artwork on and they can really stand out in public.

Do you have any tips for anyone to keep in mind when designing their own tote bag design?

Fine detail doesn’t always translate that well through screen printing (which is something I have to keep reminding myself) so keep your design striking and bold by using defined line work rather than intricate shading. I also think a limited colour palette always works best as well.

What is your favourite tote bag you’ve ever owned?

Ive kept a few nice ones from when I visited Bali recently. A lot of clothing stores in Canggu gave out totes instead of plastic bags which I thought was great.

If you could send your tote bag to anyone in the world who would it be and why?

Bill Murray. I reckon he could rock a tote bag.

What is in your bag right now?

My laptop, a bunch of prints ready to go to the post office, my notebook and a few stray pebbles for some reason.
