The Travelling Canvas – Alec Doherty

The craft beer fans among you may recognise the work of the latest creative to collaborate with us on The Travelling Canvas project, with his creations making up the branding for Partizan brewery.

We’ve enlisted Alec Doherty’s bold, bright designs, to create a tote perfect for carrying home a can or two.

For those who don’t know you, please can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Alec, I grew up in Darlington in the North East of England, I’m the youngest of 7 kids. I’m an illustrator and practising artist.  I’ve always loved to draw and make things. After art college and a little searching around I ended up in London. I’ve been here around 8 years now.

Just over 6 years ago I decided to take a little break from my job as a designer to make some of my own work, around the same time my friend Andy Smith opened up a brewery and ask me to help out with some artwork for his beers. The beer was great (still is) which meant my artwork was seen by lots of people, I started to pick up lots of interesting commissions, which meant I didn’t have to go back to work. I still haven’t gone back!

What was the inspiration behind your design for The Travelling Canvas?

I find inspiration for work in lots of different places. I’m fascinated like most of us are in people and I find the things they do/are a constant source for ideas. This is Mary, she’s a character loosely based on a regular at a working men’s club from my hometown.

We think tote bags are awesome, but why do you love totes?

You can put things in them, you can also put them in your pocket. They can be flags for ideas or used as a makeshift hat if you get caught in the rain. What’s more to say, they’re great.

Do you have any tips for anyone to keep in mind when designing their own tote bag design?

Hmmm… make something you like, and try to avoid anything offensive like a motivational quote 😜

What’s the best tote bag you’ve ever owned?

The one I’ve got with me today by my friends Nous Vous. It’s big, unbelievably I’ve managed to get 3 cans of dog food, a pair of size 11 trainers, a couple of tops a pair of trousers, swimmers, undies and socks, a book, wash bag, a jacket for Babs, 2 cans for the train and a bottle of Havana Club in there! Amazing.

If you could send your tote bag to anyone in the world who would it be and why?

Donald Glover.

What is in your bag right now?

I’m going away for a few days so as mentioned above!
