Our Top Tips for starting your Creative Journey

The past year has seen so many of us venturing into the creative world for what might’ve been the first time, the longest time or the most amount of available time – everyone’s different right?! Whether you’ve been gracefully painting a vase of flowers, or have a new found love for reading, everyone’s creative journey is completely unique and begins in the most magical ways.

Being creative is not only something to stimulate the mind, but it can also help to relax you. Creativity helps us as humans in so many ways, it can aid us emotionally, psychologically, and can even assist shaping our individuality and even help problem solve, there are so many reasons why it is so important. Creativity can come in all shapes and sizes, from the obvious ones like having an artistic flare, to how you organise your surroundings. Creativity knows no boundaries, and here at Awesome Merchandise, it is something that we like to encourage at all times.

This got us thinking about the power of creativity, and how it can mold our personalities and individuality. With creativity being such a vast thing, it cannot be defined by one sentence or word or activity, its power alone is something that we should cherish. For instance, the definition of creativity is the ability to come up with new and exciting ideas, so without an initial idea, we wouldn’t have or do half of the things that we have today. Someone had to have a creative, exciting and new idea, to enable us to evolve in a way where we live in a world with unlimited possibilities.

Today we wanted to talk to you about creativity as a whole, and how you can maximise the amount of creativity you include in your day to day lives. We’ve curated some of our best top tips for starting a creative journey, from really simple things that anyone can do, to things that require slightly more thought and resources.

  • Don’t be afraid to start.

    1. Starting something new can sometimes seem a little daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be as simple as taking photos on your phone, or reading a book, creativity comes in all shapes and sizes and cannot be defined by one thing. You don’t need a huge amount of resources to begin. Successfully starting a creative journey isn’t defined by the equipment or money you spend, it’s for you and no one else.

  • Enjoy every moment!

    1. Make sure you are doing something that never feels like a chore. Eventually, if you want it to, it will get to the point where you might have to force a couple of late nights or early mornings for client work, but ultimately do it for yourself and enjoy it!

  • Inspiration is all around you.

    1. There’s no such thing as too much inspiration, surround yourself with inspiring things, and you can even take inspiration from the mundane of day to day life. Books and prints are a great way to start if you’re looking for inspiration from resources you can get your hands on easily.

  • Set goals for yourself.

    1. Now we don’t necessarily mean huge goals that require a lot of time, just simple ones that are easily achievable, but will give you great satisfaction in your work when they are completed. Spending thirty minutes reading each day? Make that a goal!

  • Organisation and time management are key.

    1. Keep organised from day 1. Whether you’ve started sketching or drafting out pieces of writing, keep them all – you never know when you might need them again, plus in a year’s time, they’ll prove to you how far you’ve come. Managing your time can be really simple if you’ve already ticked off the organisation of your journey, you need to make sure that you are still living a balanced lifestyle. Make sure you’re still taking time out to spend quality time with your friends and family.

  • Small projects for familiar faces are great.

    1. Whether it’s your friend or family member who asks you to do a small project for them with little or no money included, take it! In the beginning of your journey you need to experience the little things to bloom into something wonderful. It might seem small at the time, but you never know where a small project can lead.

  • Don’t be put off by creative blocks.

    1. Creative block is something that almost everyone experiences, some people will see it as being the end of their journey but others will just see it as a short break. Sometimes the answer is to push through it and break down the wall, and other times the situation may call for taking your mind off the tasks in hand. But don’t let it get you down, we all need a break sometimes. Strangely you’ll most likely find that the answer will come to you when you’re doing the most mundane tasks in the world, so get washing those dishes!

  • Be a lifelong learner.

    1. There’s not much we need to say about this point really. The world is forever developing and so are the people that inhabit it. Creativity is something that can never be bound and is therefore always developing in new ways. Whatever your age, you’re never too old to learn something new. There is wealth in knowledge in every field imaginable. So set yourself some time to learn, whether it be from books, YouTube, or local creatives who do similar activities.
