How our merch helped Youth Man get on the road

We teamed up with the people over at Sentric Music to give away a £400 merch prize for one of their lucky bands. If you don’t know what Sentric do, they’re basically an awesome service which helps bands with their publishing. It’s super hard being a band on the road and we feel that along with Sentric, we provide a service that helps give bands the tools to make themselves money and keep themselves in guitar strings and humous…. let’s find out more from Youth Man, who won the first contest.

Tell us about Youth Man and a quick band history / what you’re up to next

We started the band when we got out of college. It was our first band so we did a lot of experimenting. People seemed to like what we did so we just started gigging relentlessly. Last year we got Miles in on Bass. Since then we’ve been non stop touring and writing and somehow managing to blag our way onto some wicked shows – Montreux Jazz Festival was a highlight.

We’re just starting a big UK tour with Tigercub. It’s about 20 dates up and down the country. We’ve also just signed to Venn records (Gallows, Marmozets, Milk Teeth, Baby Godzilla/Heck) so when we get back we’re hitting the studio to record another EP – that’s coming out in the spring.

Tell us about your tour around Germany – best shows / have you been before etc

The German tour was awesome. All the shows have blurred into one cos we were just vibing off the whole experience. German music fans are crazy! They wanted us to sign stuff and take photos with them and all that stuff.. They bought a shitload of merch too!

How did the merch from the Sentric / AM comp benefit the band and what did they buy with it?

The merch we won was a huge help. Selling that stuff basically paid for our fuel for the tour. Without it we’d probably have to be busting out the credit card. We got a load of shirts, stickers, guitar picks, drumsticks, posters and badges. The guitar picks are SICK. They’re pink and they have James Brown’s face on them.

Which merch items were most popular on tour?

We ran out of stickers and badges about halfway through the tour.. People were digging the new shirts too – the quality of the print is fab.

How does Sentric Music help the band / music scene?

Sentric is a fantastic service – without it we’d have missed out on a load of money that we didn’t even know we were entitled to. They make the publishing/royalty side of things really simple, and the site’s really easy to use. It’s cool to have somebody pushing our music out for synchronisation opportunities as well. Overall, they take care of the stuff that as gigging musicians with full time jobs, we don’t have the time or mental space for.

Three great bits of advice for any bands out on the road right now….

1. Know your gear inside out so you can fix it fast. Cos it WILL break.
2. Get used to sharing beds with your bandmates. Maybe practice before you go on tour..
3. Your merchandise will feed you. So spend time at the merch table and SELL IT. And of course, make sure your merch looks awesome (merch.com)
