Leeds Art Hostel – A first glimpse behind the scenes of an awesome new project!

Tagged with:

Have you ever been to Berlin or Amsterdam and stayed in an awesome hostel? You might have met new like-minded people and experienced the city in a totally different way to what you would if you’d stayed in a generic cheap hotel. Well, the UK isn’t as crazy on hosteling as our European counterparts but this is all about to change in Leeds with the advent of the Leeds Art Hostel!

So, what’s an ‘Art Hostel’ and why does Leeds need one? We got the guided tour from John Slemensek who is part of the East Street Arts collective and is very passionate about the project..

“The Art Hostel was born from years of experience of visiting other European cities and how they host people. Soon we decided we wanted to do the same and create a space in the city to host visitors in an individual way. A few drinks in our local made us realise this could be a reality.”

The Art Hostel is situated where Bird’s Yard used to be at 83 Kirkgate. The team have already started cleaning it all up from a massive state of disrepair and are hoping to open early in the new year. We had a look round, and it’s going to be amazing. The building and all the rooms are architecturally interesting and that’s not even the best bit…

The Art Hostel will house up to 30 people per night but will also be used as an events space and will dedicate itself to showcasing great art from local and outside artists alike. The cherry on the creative cake is that each room will be uniquely decorated and there’s gonna be an ‘Awesome Room!’

We’re super happy to be onboard with this great community project and can’t wait to create an awesome room that thousands of people will stay in over the next few years! There’s still a few days for you to get involved and support the project right here.

“Each bedroom will be a unique design, contemporary and comfortable, while a project space hosts a programme of artists events and installations, linking back out into the creative underbelly of the city.”

We’re going to be bringing you a lot more info over the coming weeks as well as photos as the project space develops. It’s so exciting to be a part of something like this and when it’s all done, we hope that when you guys come to Leeds, that you’ll stay there and experience Leeds in a unique and creative way.

“We have a number of projects planned including a community bakery, an alternative tourist guide, creative souping, a speak easy to name but a few! All of these will be artist led and delivered. We additionally will be commissioning artists to decorate and design all the rooms people will stay in.”

You can check out the Art Hostel’s site, Facebook and Twitter.
