A collaboration with: Adam Menzies

Over the years we’ve teamed up with a whole host of talented folk to create our limited edition Awesome Merchandise T-shirts. For our latest design, we brought in Bradford-based illustrator, Adam Menzies, to inject some summer vibes into our wardrobes.

We sat down with Adam to discover where he gets inspiration from and get his top tips for T-shirt designs.

Getting to Know Adam Menzies

As a freelance illustrator and artist, Adam is influenced by the everyday, enjoying drawing the often small overlooked situations and shining a spotlight on them with a humorous twist.

“I’m currently working on a series of subversive surface patterns for my MA. For example  one of my pieces is an ornate wallpaper pattern from a distance, but on closer inspection it’s lots of different people throwing up.

“I didn’t have a strict brief for this project, apart from the fact that it should loosely be based around summer vibes. Me and Luke went back and forth with ideas. He pitched having Dolly on there which I thought would be a good idea. I added lots of different things that represent summer and gave Dolly some cool shades.”

Adam Menzie’s top tips for T-shirt designs

  1) Less is more Try to keep it simple. This particular design is pretty detailed, but I think that it manages to strike a nice balance and isn’t too busy. A lot of good T-shirt designs tend to be simple.

 2) Design with the T-shirt in mind

Mock up with actual design on a T-shirt while you’re in the designing phase. I drew up a simple T-shirt template for each of the rough designs I did.

  3) Think structurally

Always think about the structures of the piece. In my opinion a circular structure always works well for a T-shirt design.

  4) Remember your audience

Don’t forget to consider your audience when designing; who is going to wear it and why?  This will help you when deciding on your concept and stick to your brief.
