We’re back with another edition of our Awesome Zine series, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting the day we could show this one off to you all! Introducing…Awesome Zine 3! Cue the fanfare please!
Back in August, we attended the return of the wonderful Birmingham Design Festival, where we got to view some amazing pieces by artists local to Birmingham, as well as putting on our own virtual workshop. The workshop took place during the week-long event of the festival, and after visiting the opening afternoon, we were super excited to see what creativity could flow virtually.
Our Awesome Zine series has been focused around the word “Awesome”, and we’ve adapted it for each workshop that we’ve hosted. Each doodling task was time sensitive, so it was really interesting for us to see the different outcomes that participants came up with during each exercise.
Our Senior Designer – Mr. Gordo, was joined by his friend Rob Peart from Zineswap to host the workshop, which consisted of seven simple tasks which were all set to five minutes per task.
A is for Automatic Awesomness.
Surrealist fun times, miro style. Release control and just make marks on the paper. Leave things open ended, loosen up, hold your pen in different positions, different hands or drraw what you find to be awesome. Great warm up exercise!
W is for Wobbly.
Non-Dominant hand observational drawing. Pick an object and put the pen in the hand you don’t usually use to write or draw. Write the world wobbly or pick an object and try to draw it.
E is for Ear.
What can you hear, cars, birds or music? Draw it, or just draw your own ear from memory or use a mirror. You might have a celebrity ear you really like, why not give that a draw.
S is for Silhouette.
Close your eyes and draw your silhouette by tracing the outline of your face with your finger or draw the silhouette of an object in your room.
O is for OZZY!
Draw an image of the Brummie himself or draw the metal head from your own mind.
M is for Multiples.
Grab a load of pens and draw a monster from your own mind with as many pens at once.
E is for everyone.
Draw yourself. Doodle selfie time! From your mind, how you see yourself or in front of a mirror.
We had so much fun creating this zine and hosting this workshop. With a huge thank you to everyone who got involved and the organisers. Special thanks to Rob Peart, Luke Tonge and Daniel Alcorn.
