Awesome Merchandise Meets NTU Join: Let’s Talk Zines

On the 18th of March, our Senior Designer here at Awesome Merch – Mr. Gordo was invited to help host an interactive workshop with Nottingham Trent University, along with Matt Gill from Raw Print. The workshop was an opportunity for students to learn all about Zines and to collaborate on the first Awesome Zine

 

What’s a Zine you say? Zines have been around since 1776 and encourage the free spirit nature which lives amongst artists and creatives all over the globe. They can be created in a number of different ways, the more traditional being physical cutting and sticking with the aid of a photocopier or more commonly today, they are created on computers using software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. These publications are then folded and stapled to create the limitless masterpiece that is a Zine.

 

 

Back in October 2020, Nottingham Trent University set up a scheme to encourage students to take part in online workshops with creatives. NTU Join was born with the idea in mind to create a new digital platform and creative community, to inspire students from every course at the university to interact and create a sense of community during these challenging times. 

 

Mr. Gordo and Matt Gill (Raw Print) set up an engaging and creative workshop, kindly organised by Megan Wall at NTU, which was packed full of interactive activities. This was in order to allow NTU students to escape the outside world for an hour and to enjoy some time with no-pressure doodling and fun.

 

The students took part in seven different easygoing activities designed around the word AWESOME – of course! Each letter stood for something different and students were encouraged to draw and doodle whatever came to mind. 

 

 

A is for Awesome 

Draw what is awesome to you. Or what you can see in your room that’s awesome. 

 

 

W is for Wobbly 

Draw in a wobbly way. Hold the pen in your other hand or hold it in your mouth, if you have tape to hand then tape them to your hand. 

 

 

E is for Embarrassment 

Draw an embarrassing moment / share an embarrassing moment for someone else to draw or what does embarrassment look like to you. 

 

 

S is for Silhouettes 

Close your eyes and draw your silhouette, by tracing the outline of your face with your finger. Or draw silhouettes of objects in your room. 

 

 

O is for Object 

Describe and draw – someone describes an object and the rest of us have to draw it. 

 

 

M is for Multiple

Draw a monster whilst holding many, many pens in one hand. Or draw other objects or yourself.  

 

 

E is for Each other

Grand Finale! All look at each other and select people to draw a quick portrait of – feel free to use any previous techniques. 

 

 

 

We asked all of the participating students to email over their doodles and we collated them into a zine. We then printed them and sent copies to each student so they could have something to remember the course by! 

 

 

The end result was filled with “bizarrely beautiful and randomly ridiculous” (Matt Gill’s words), results and we couldn’t be happier to see them all come to life. We had a great time hosting this workshop and it sparked a great idea within our Awesome team…

 

So we thought we’d host our own! 

 

Introducing… An Awesome Zine Day. We will be hosting this event this Friday (16/04/21) for all our fellow creatives and part-time doodles to join in. This event will be hosted by our great Mr. Gordo and a couple of his pals – Rob Peart from Zineswap and Matt Gill from Raw Print.
