A slice of pastel fancy meets Leeds’ wittiest card maker!

A couple of weeks ago we had a great opportunity to meet (socially distanced of course) and interview the wonderful Laura and Dani, formally known as Front Bum Cards and Noonchi Cakes. We had the chance to chat to them about their brand new collaboration together and the meaning behind it.

Front Bum Cards is run by Laura, an illustrator who makes cards and prints to make you laugh. Her selection ranges from witty anniversary cards, to great celebrity portraits, all printed on recycled stock too!

Noonchi Cake is run by Dani, she is the mastermind behind all of the incredible cakes. From the recipe to the decoration, Dani’s skills show no limits and you might have even already seen some of her work featured on her page.

What drew you to collaborate with each other?

Laura – I am obsessed with Dani and when she posted the vintage bear cakes I told her the story of my 4th birthday party where the dog jumped up on the table and started eating the cake. My mum had to piece it all back together and put candles in its bum to cover it up. We were just back and forth egging each other on with ideas and it just happened and we just went with it and sorted it all out with Awesome Merch in just a few days

Dani – I love Laura’s work! We connected early on after I started Noonchi & she has been super supportive from the start. I have been thinking about offering a greetings card as an add on to my cakes for a while and immediately thought of Front Bum. The idea grew over a love for 3D vintage animal birthday cakes and here we are.

What is the meaning behind this collaboration?

Dani –  I want to offer my customers the option to include a greetings card with their orders, I do get a lot of requests for birthday cakes and orders from people outside of Leeds (one customer was in LA!) ordering for a Leeds resident. They often like having a personal note written with the cake and so these cards give them the option to have it written on a gorgeous card.

Laura – Just 2 badass babes that super appreciate each other’s work and wanted to do something fun because we can.

What do you most admire about each other?

Laura –  How she does exactly what she wants with her craft and owns it. She’s made cakes cool! She smashes out the best cakes whilst being a mum and working full time.

Dani – I love Laura’s positive attitude and sense of humour. I think both of these attributes shine through in her work.

How did you come up with the design?

Dani – I left this up to Laura! It was important for me to make sure she had creative reign on the card design.

Laura – Dani gave me free reign and once I had some ideas I sent them over and we played with colours and text.

What has been your favourite achievement over the past year?

Laura – Selling 6,000 cards in a week. Insane!

Dani – I have said this before, as cheesy as it sounds, every order that comes in is a huge achievement for me still. But if I was to pick a real high moment it was being featured by British Vogue or the Financial Times.

What has been your favourite cake or card you have designed and created?

Dani – It’s got to be a toss up between last year’s Valentines designs (the sacred heart and cupid cakes) or my all time favourite ‘The Buffy’ which is my signature vintage coffin cake.

Laura – It’s so hard to choose, I have over 100 designs. But I’d pick my Diana card.

We’re super grateful to have been invited to take part with this collaboration, and it was a pleasure to meet both Dani and Laura.
